Flytying Secret

While getting my boat ready for this weekends musky float which involved removing 10 inches of snow and about 6" of ice because I was too stupid to cover my boat before the last big storm we had, I realized water had got into the shaft of my oars and when the water froze broke the end of the blade off of both oars.  A new pair will be purchased but this obviously left me no time to have functioning oars for this Sunday.  You are probably asking yourself "What the hell does this have to do with flytying secrets?". Well here it is. Superglue and borax.  For those of  you that don't know when superglue and borax are mixed it instantly has a chemical reaction that hardens on contact.  Not only does it harden on contact but it is as hard as concrete.  I learned this from a friend of mine that is a taxidermist.  I have been using this trick for various flytying activities.  I use it to mount custom carved taxidermy foam  heads onto hooks for topwater predator flies but it has numerous uses both in flytying and around the house.  I am putting this fix to the test this weekend by fixing my Sawyers.  Now that I have fixed them I have beat these things off of the floor and even twisted them as hard as I could and couldn't get them to break again.  Hopefully this will do the trick.  Hell I might not even need new blades now.

Borax and Superglue

I sprinkled Borax on the end of broken blade

Put some super glue on the other end and stick together.
I then added some more externally on the blades to reinforce

Color it with black Sharpie

Finished product good as new

Musky Slime

It is known by many a fisherman that musky slime has magical capabilities.  It's great for dry skin, pain relief, has been known to cure the common cold, and I hear research is showing that is being used to even cure the HIV.  (Disclaimer: This is sarcasm) What it is best at is the cure for cabin fever.  Old Man Winter has had his icy grips on the waters of PA all year and I am chomping at the bit to get out.  The fly tying and demos that I have been doing are just making things worst.  You tie a really bitchin fly and you can't take it out for weeks or months.  Hell I have even tied musky flies without hooks to rope and played with the cats to fuel my urges.  The few trips that I had planned were cancelled because of winter weather but this weekend I shall be revived.  I will be hitting the mighty Allegheny and hopefully get my years worth of musky slime antibiotics.

Dying Materials

Here is a good piece on dying materials.  It can be very simple sometimes, other times you feel like breaking shit.  These are some good basic rules but the only way to figure it out is to try it for yourself and keep good notes.  I have all my tails ready for dye and soon the musky lab will be brewing up.  Jess has no idea what she got herself into when she met me (insert evil laugh).

Hardly Strictly Musky the Southern Classic

This annual gathering of the musky tribes will take place May 2nd and 3rd.  This is sure to be a weekend of great fishing, and bullshitting among the country's musky fly anglers.  The event will take place on the banks of the Collins River in McMinnville, TN and is sponsored by Towee Guide Tested Skiffs and Scientific Anglers.  Along with the fishing is a BBQ dinner, craft beer tasting, and a fundraiser for Project Healing Waters.  If interested in attending get a hold of Todd Gregory of Towee.  Entree fee is $145 per angler.
